The peace lily earns its reputation the honest way: it tolerates the kind of low light and inconsistent watering that kills off less patient houseplants, and it still throws up glossy white blooms that look almost sculpted. The leaves stay a deep, healthy green even in a north-facing room.
It's one of the better plants for improving indoor air quality, and it's forgiving if you forget to water it for a week. The leaves droop dramatically and then bounce back within hours of a good soak. Keep it out of direct sun and let the top inch of soil dry between waterings.
